Clockwork Spider No 4 (II) by AMechanicalMind Clockwork Spider No 4 (II) by AMechanicalMind
buy: [link]

This is a hand assembled and very realistic mechanical Spider made from the recycled parts of old watches.

His legs consist of some 24 different watch winding stems that have been broken into the various "leg" parts and then soldered at the joints (with lead free silver bearing solder) into a very lifelike position. The legs themselves required 32 very tiny soldered points.

The legs were attached to a body made of soldered strap springs, watch stems, and a nickle and brass cylinder pulled from a watch.

The abdomen was created from a tiny dead automotive light bulb whose leads are attached to the body with solder.

There is no glue or resin to be found in the piece...everything is soldered into place with metal. This is a one of a kind work of art, never to be exactly reproduced.

Dimensions: 38mm wide by 47mm front to back by 22mm tall. He comes with a 3" by 4" glass dome with walnut base for display. He is extremely fragile and should be handled sparingly and very gently, and is most definitely not a toy.

Despite the fact that I'm scared as hell of spiders, this is really awesome. Wouldn't want to own it, but it's still awesome haha.

Do you use a torch or an iron to solder watch parts that small? Also, do you have an issue soldering metals of different types together? It looks like you have some copper, steel, etc. on there.

It's an iron...flame control would be too hard with a torch on something this small. It's hard enough as it is with a 1/32" tip. Metals tend not to be the real issue, unless it is unsolderable like pot metal or stainless steel. It's more about the sizes of the pieces being soldered together. Larger pieces need to be heated longer than smaller ones. Timing is key.

Thanks. :) Most of the stuff I solder is on a bit larger scale, which I do with a torch. I've been wanting to try smaller stuff for a while, but didn't really know how to go about soldering it. Thanks for the tips.
